Interim began in 1976 as a response to California’s growing problem with mentally ill patients who had nowhere to go after the closure of state mental health hospitals.
With a 12-bed halfway house in Monterey, followed by a second facility in Salinas, Interim grew to add vocational opportunities with its (now sold) Sunflour Cookie Company, followed by Supported Education and Employment Services in 1996. Today, Interim continues to serve Monterey County’s “overwhelming” (per Interim executive director Barbara Mitchell) population of mentally ill, low-income residents with housing, support services and treatment.
Says one resident, “They helped me go to school, they helped me go to work, they helped me in generous ways: board and care housing, meals. They did advocacy for me when I was homeless to bring me back into their services again, and honestly, without Interim I wouldn’t have anything I have now.”

About 70 community members attended the Feb. 28 open house of Interim, Inc., a nonprofit mental health agency, at its new South Monterey County location at 2149 H Dela Rosa, Suite #203, in Soledad.
