VOLUNTEER

Do you want to know where Monterey got its name? The history-loving volunteers of the Old Monterey Foundation are here to answer all your questions about Sebastián Vizcaíno's big idea in 1602.

We can thank the foundation for the gorgeous scenic park that is Lower Presidio Historic Park—the vision of the late local Monterey resident Willard (Bill) McCrone—with its many historic signs, two scenic trails, informational kiosk sign, and picnic tables. Dedicated to “promoting, supporting and enhancing the artistic, cultural and historic environment of historic Downtown Monterey,” the nonprofit continues to enhance charming historic adobes and promote local history and art. The group also offers monthly historic walking tours on such themes as “Focus on Sebastián Vizcaíno—Discovery of the Monterey Bay.”
