On June 28, 2023, the Colfax City Council convened to interview candidates to fill vacancies left by two councilmembers who left office within the previous six weeks. Mayor Pro Tem Kim Douglass made a motion to appoint Larry Hillberg, whose appointment was approved in a 2-1 vote.

Hillberg is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who is retired from IBM but still active as a computer software consultant in addition to volunteering for athletic programs and other community service.

Hillberg shares his views on the potential he sees in Colfax: “Our city is like an empty canvas, waiting for the creators and volunteers. Murals would get us started. And a day use river park along the nearby Bear River. My strongest interest is our historic downtown. The best opportunities lie there.”

The proposed ordinance would allow the city engineer to provide a letter to a property owner to notify them and document a needed sidewalk repair. The property owner would then have 90 days to complete the repair. If the repair is not made in the provided completion period, the city would repair the sidewalk and recoup the costs from the property owner. The council approved the ordinance introduction during its Jan. 8 meeting.
