With a population of 1.9 million, Santa Clara County has its share of urban hardscape. Fortunately, it’s also rich in parklands. By the numbers, residents have access to 28 county parks that cover more than 50,000 acres. They can enjoy 10 lakes, 48 group picnic areas, 12 campgrounds and 350 miles of trails. Parks range from graceful and serene Villa Montalvo in the Santa Cruz Mountains, once the estate of Senator James Phelan, to Joseph D. Grant County Park, 10,882 acres of grasslands and oak forests in the sprawling east foothills.
