New Music Works is a concert series connecting people to music of our time, with a heavy emphasis on local artists.
New Music Works was created in 1979 by five local composers with the goal of publicly performing each others’ works. New Music Works is still home to founding member Philip Collins, who has served as artistic director since the early 1980s. In addition to an 11-piece performance orchestra, the company also periodically hosts guests artists.
New Music Works founded a program called Sound Horizons in 1997 to focus on young composers. This annual performance features music composed by college students, and includes a cash prize compeititon, as well as the opportunity for the winner to have their work featured in a concert with professional composers and musicians.
New Music Works continues to focus on musical diversity, collaborating and partnering with music theater artists from all throughout the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz areas.
