Abode Services’ mission is to end homelessness by putting housing first. It takes action by supporting housing development, managing property, housing services, and offering programs and services for individuals.
Abode was founded in Alameda County in 1989 by a group of people who came together to address the growing problem of homelessness in the Bay Area. Its programs are built on the principle of “housing first,” with effort spent on providing homes for vulnerable children and adults. Its nearly 60 programs includes job training, parenting classes, financial literacy, and much more. Abode has grown to also provide housing and services in Santa Clara, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Mateo and Napa counties.
Currently, Abode is funding a program called Project Welcome Home, aiming to rehouse as many as 200 chronically homeless individuals. Louis Chicoine, Abode’s chief executive officer, shares the group’s goal: “We hope this program not only changes the lives of participants, but also provides a template for future programs across the country seeking the best way to address chronic homelessness.”
