Girls on the Run is a unique nonprofit that incorporates running into mentoring programs for young ladies.
Girls on the Run inspires girls to be healthy and confident by giving them the encouragement they need to reach their full potential and talk through their experiences and beliefs while also learning the importance of healthy relationships and teamwork.
Held in three-month sessions with physical activity interwoven, each session concludes with a big, celebratory, non-competitive Girls on the Run 5k event. The public is welcome to participate in this fun finale while the girls get a tangible understanding of accomplishment and how to achieve big goals, especially when they cross the finish line.
Girls on the Run is open to girls in the third, fourth and fifth grades. However, the nonprofit also supports a Heart & Sole program for girls in sixth, seventh and eighth grades as well as a Junior Coach program for girls ages 16-18. Ever since Girls on the Run-Sierras was founded in 2007, it has empowered more than 3,600 girls within the Reno-Tahoe area.
