Friends of the West Shore is a grassroots volunteer organization dedicated to protecting and preserving Lake Tahoe’s West Shore.

Since its inception in 2007, Friends of the West Shore has worked to preserve, protect, and conserve Lake Tahoe’s West Shore, which is defined as the communities south of the Truckee River from Tahoe City, extending to Emerald Bay, and including both Placer and El Dorado counties. FOWS works to protect the watershed, wildlife, and rural lifestyle of those residents living within and near its boundaries.

FOWS participates in various research projects designed to understand threats to the West Shore and their future impact. They then support redevelopment efforts that are environmentally friendly and appropriate for the communities and character of the region. When it comes to problematic development proposals, events or plans that threaten the environment or alter the health of the region, FOWS represents locals and supporters at Tahoe Regional Planning Agency meetings, as well as at state and federal levels.

Through its newsletter, website, and e-Alerts, the group spreads the word on upcoming meetings, development plans, or environmental impacts. While FOWS focuses on a variety of things, priority issues include Meeks Bay restoration, State Route 89 Corridor planning, and Homewood Mountain Resort.
