When Sheriff Devon Bell retired in July 2022, Wayne Woo was chosen by the Placer County Board of Supervisors to fill out Bell’s term. Woo ran for a new term in the June 2022 primary and won outright against opponent Brandon Bean, a sheriff’s sergeant.
He grew up in the Sacramento region, and has been a law enforcement officer since 1990. He has served the Placer County Sheriff's Office since 1994, starting out as a deputy. He has worked in many different units, including Investigations and the Special Enforcement Team, where he was team commander. Woo has also taught for more than 1,000 hours at both Sierra College and the Sheriff's Office.
Woo lives in Newcastle with his wife and three children. He has a master's degree in criminal justice management from the University of Nevada, Reno. He’s an active outdoorsmen, and many around town have spotted him on the bike trails and putting greens.
Upon being elected Placer County Sheriff, Wayne Woo made a statement to ABC 10: “We continue to make this the best place to live, work, and raise our families, we continue to make it the safest community in the state of California. I’m honored today to serve as your next sheriff.”
