TRUCKEE, Calif. – On September 19, 2024, over 50 community members gathered at Alibi Ale Works in Truckee to engage with local housing experts and address the pressing housing challenges facing the Truckee Tahoe region. The event, co-hosted by several key housing organizations, brought together the Truckee Tahoe Workforce Housing Agency, Town of Truckee, Placer County, Tahoe Housing Hub, Placemate, Sierra Community House, and the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, along with residents eager to ask questions and learn about local housing solutions.

As of this writing, it appears the Tahoe Conservancy is about to acquire Motel Six, a happy ending for a motel that used to charge six dollars. I happened to have enjoyed a summer there myself some sixty-three summers ago. Yes, in that heavenly summer of '61, Motel Six was the Sands, and they hired a 17-year-old lifeguard to work their pool for the summer, yours truly.

Research published today in the journal Science, led by researchers at the Carnegie Institution for Science, indicates that climate change impacts critical winter processes including lake ice conditions. Changes in lake ice conditions impact the function of ecosystems and the communities that live nearby. With climate affecting this critical winter process one can ask, what other critical changes to freshwaters might occur from changing winters whether at Lake Tahoe, or the small lakes and streams in the mountains of California and Nevada?
