As one of the largest cities in the state, Stockton cites agriculture as its primary industry and aims to protect, preserve and document its local heritage. Though the city cycled through several names—including Tuleburg and Mudville—it was ultimately named after Commodore Robert F. Stockton, making it the first city in California to bear an English appellation. Today, residents and visitors alike can explore the city’s agriculture and history through a visit to the Haggin Museum or events like the annual Stockton Asparagus Festival.
The citizens of Stockton have been represented by a city council since 1850. Currently, six councilmembers are elected by voters in the district they represent, and the mayor is elected by all voters. Meetings are open to the public and can be viewed on Stockton GovTV.
The Stockton Planning Commission meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber, 425 N El Dorado St, Stockton.
