Back in the mid-1980s, the Santa Cruz Historical Society and the Art Museum of Santa Cruz County came together to build a museum for art and history at the site of the former county jail.
Though it took a long time, and was delayed by the 1989 earthquake, the McPherson Center for the Arts, which houses the Museum of Art and History, and the adjoining Abbot Square, have transformed downtown Santa Cruz.

The McPherson Art and History Museum has a new director, Ginger Shulick Porcella. She comes with experience at museums big and small, from Arizona to Minnesota, and has big ideas as the MAH approaches its 30th anniversary next year.
