A fifth-generation Yolo County resident, Sheriff Tom Lopez attended school in the Esparto School District and joined the Sheriff’s Office right after high school, signing on as a reserve deputy sheriff in 1980. He became a full-time deputy in 1984, and transferred to the Sacramento County Marshall’s Office in 1985. He returned to the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office in 1988.
In January 2007, Lopez was promoted to undersheriff-coroner and was responsible for day-to-day operations for the next 12 years. He was elected Sheriff - Coroner - Public Administrator on June 5, 2018. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and was also active in his community, serving as a volunteer fireman for the Esparto and Madison fire districts.
