San Jose’s 10 city council members each represent a district, the borders of which are adjusted after every US census. The city has had district representation since 1978, when San Jose voters passed Measure F, which brought about "a metamorphosis of City politics unparalleled since the reforms at the turn of the century," according to the San Jose Mercury News. The city’s mayor is elected by all voters to a four-year term, though the term beginning in 2022 will only be two years, so that the mayoral race will fall during years with a presidential election.
