In the latest issue of Tahoe Quarterly, writer Tim Hauserman focuses on the South Lake Tahoe neighborhood a around Ski Run Boulevard and Willow, “a neighborhood where families of moderate means live in apartments and small homes, with no park nearby for the kids to play.” As SLT pro-tem mayor Devin Middlebrook notes, “There’s a real misconception that everyone in Tahoe has an equal opportunity to get outdoors.”

A vacant patch of land left over from a Safeway development was a makeshift play area for local youngsters, until it was fenced off seven years ago. Now a community group called the Friends of Ski Run has broken ground on the park on the site, set to open next year. Fundraising to pay off the park’s cost is still underway: $100 buys you a brick with your name on it; $25,000 gets you naming rights on a play structure.
