From sandy or rocky shores, wetlands, pine forests to unique playgrounds, Monterey's open spaces provide a wealth of recreation and leisure activities. Many of Monterey’s 37 parks feature barbecue grills, sports fields, playground equipment and other amenities.

City parks are open daily but are closed to the public between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Since in-person recreational programs have been curtailed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the city offered a Virtual Recreation Center to bring programs and resources to residents and their families in the comfort of their own homes.
