Billed as California’s first public library (established in 1849), the Monterey Public Library keeps an extensive collection of books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, web services, microforms and historical collections. The library is governed by an administrative board established by the Monterey City Charter that establishes library policies, hires the library director, and recommends the library budget to the City Council. The Monterey Public Library Board of Trustees meets monthly on the fourth Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. (unless otherwise announced). These are open to the public, with agendas posted 72 hours prior to regular meetings.
