As a Del Rey Oaks resident and homeowner, first-time candidate John Uy was elected as Del Rey Oaks Councilmember in the November 2022 election, and is starting his four-year term in December.

Uy (pronounced “Oo-Wee”) is a naturalized Filipino immigrant who teaches Tagalog at the Defense Language Institute. He is Harvard-educated, with master’s degrees in education and information technology. His major concern is road safety. Until the proposed Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway (FORTAG) is built, he and his dog will have to sprint across the highway when walking across Canyon Del Rey.

Uy’s other concerns include the following: public safety, identifying the best sustainable water solutions, increasing access to affordable housing, incentivizing growth of local businesses, and encouraging eco-friendly practices in the community.

Notable quotes:
“I want to serve in the DRO City Council to give back to the country that has given so much to my family, and I want to make our beloved Del Rey Oaks a better place to live, work, and visit for all of us. I will fight for resources to keep our neighborhoods safe for our seniors, families, and pets.” (Source:
