On May 13, 2020, the councilmember and Emily Kawada, a senior of Inderkum High School and chair of the Sacramento Youth Commission, had an op-ed published in the Sacramento Bee. They asked city leaders to prioritize youths’ needs when looking at  $89 million the city received from the federal CARES legislation. They called specifically for city leaders to listen to the non-profit advocates of Sac Kids First, an organization centered on children and youth, to provide virtual safe spaces and enrichment activities for youth.

In the op-ed Schenirer and Kawada wrote, “Now more than ever we need to focus on the mental health and wellbeing of our children and youth. They need reassurance and someone to talk to when they feel down or lonely. They are telling us what they are struggling with and what they want.”
