City of Sacramento City Council Councilmember Jay Schenirer

Jay Schenirer first assumed office as city councilmember in Sacramento’s District 5 in 2010.  He won his reelection campaign with 53.8 percent of the vote on June 5, 2018, beating opponents Tamika L’Ecluse, who received 39.2 percent, of the vote and Joseph Barry, who received 7 percent of the vote. District 5 includes the neighborhoods of Airport, Brentwood, Carleton Tract, Central Oak Park, Colonial Heights, Curtis Park, Fairgrounds, Fruitridge Manor, Golf Course Terrace, Hollywood Park, Lawrence Park, Med Center, North City Farms, North Oak Park. One priority of Councilmember Schenirer’s is to invest in Sacramento’s youth. On May 13, 2020, the councilmember and Emily Kawada, a senior of Inderkum High School and chair of the Sacramento Youth Commission, had an op-ed published in the Sacramento Bee. They asked city leaders to prioritize youths’ needs when looking at  $89 million the city received from the federal CARES legislation. They called specifically for city leaders to listen to the non-profit advocates of Sac Kids First, an organization centered on children and youth, to provide virtual safe spaces and enrichment activities for youth.

In the op-ed Schenirer and Kawada wrote, “Now more than ever we need to focus on the mental health and wellbeing of our children and youth. They need reassurance and someone to talk to when they feel down or lonely. They are telling us what they are struggling with and what they want.”
