The Galt City Council is made up of five members who are elected by residents to staggered four-year terms. The mayor is selected by the City Council and serves for two years. Meetings are open to the public and are live-streamed online.

Following the initiative of a Sacramento City Council member, discussions are in progress for a joint meeting in the summer or fall with representatives from Sacramento County and all local municipalities to coordinate efforts to combat local homeless.
