A Tracy resident since 2006, Nancy Young has served in city government since 2012. She is Tracy’s first African-American mayor—and also, as the Tracy Press reports, the first mayor not born and raised in town.

In the middle of her second term as a councilmember, Young launched her first campaign for mayor in 2018, running on a platform of trust, accountability and transparency but ultimately losing to incumbent Robert Rickman. Young ran again in 2020, winning a five-way race for the mayor’s seat, and then cinched a win in 2022 with 43.96 percent of the vote against two challengers.

First elected: Nov. 3, 2020

Past positions held: Tracy City Council (2012-2020), Tracy Kiwanis Board of Directors (past president), Tracy African American Association (treasurer, Juneteenth chair, education vice chair)

Alma maters: UC Berkeley (bachelor’s degree, mass communications from UC Berkeley), University of Phoenix (MBA), Good News Seminary and Bible College (doctorate in theology)

Notable quotes: “In real teamwork it doesn’t matter who has the touchdown. We all win when we all work together. That’s what I’ve really learned over the entire time that I’ve been here, but especially as mayor.” (Source: Tracy Press)

“I come prepared to every meeting with two things: enough information to form an opinion and enough openness to change my mind.” (Source: City of Tracy website
