The Palo Alto Fire Department staffs six fire stations with a staff of more than 100 full time positions. To provide coverage in the sparsely developed hillside areas, an additional fire station in the foothills is operated during high fire danger days.

The department was accredited by the Commission of Fire Accreditation International in 2018, an achievement which less than 1 percent of fire departments nationwide have attained.
