Omar Din proudly states on his LinkedIn page that he is the first Muslim and the first Desi to become a Sunnyvale City Council member—and at 23 when he won office in 2020, he believes he’s also the youngest.
On his campaign page, OmarForSunnyvale.com, Din describes his background: “My parents immigrated from Pakistan in 1983. … Throughout my childhood my parents not only reinforced the value of hard work, given they both were small business owners, but also the necessity of civic engagement. I spent my weekends volunteering at community centers and local nonprofits, and it was in these experiences that I built a deep relationship with my city.”
Din gained some experience working for Assemblyman Evan Low and Congressmember Mike Honda, and he’s eager to try out what he learned about public policy in those jobs and also in college.
First elected: November 2020
Day job: Financial analyst
Alma maters: Cornell University (bachelor’s degree, policy analysis and management); De Anza College (political science)
Other office held: Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Commissioner (2016)
Notable quote: “I plan to continue Sunnyvale’s lead in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure small business owners and essential workers are protected and can continue to afford a life here.” —Omar Din, OmarForSunnyvale.com
