The Department of Public Safety is one of the few fully integrated police and fire departments in the United States. Public safety officers are cross-trained as police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians, allowing the department to provide police, fire, and emergency medical services seamlessly to the community.

Sunnyvale consistently has one of the lowest crime rates of any city in the region and state. Much of the success can be attributed to the community policing and problem-solving approach that is employed by the department.

The department is organized into nine programs: Police Services, Fire Services, Community Safety Services, Personnel and Training Services, Investigation Services, Communication Services, Public Safety Administration Services, Records Management and Property Services, and Fire Prevention and Hazardous Materials Services.
