Davis operates under a council-manager form of government. Starting with the 2020 election, each of the five council members are elected by district. City council elections occur every two years in November, where two to three seats are elected to four-year terms. The council selects one of its members to serve as mayor. Beginning in January 2024, a new mayor will be chosen every year.

Meetings: The Davis City Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 p.m., except on Tuesdays before holidays.
