West Sacramento operates under the council/manager form of government. The City Council is composed of five members. As of November 2024, all four councilmembers will have been elected by district. Currently, two of the members are the last to be elected at-large. Citizens also directly elect a mayor to serve a four-year term. Elections occur every two years in November.

Meetings: The West Sacramento City Council meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. Meetings are held at the City Hall.
