When a district seat opened up on the Woodland City Council before the 2020 election, Mayra Vega was already involved in local service projects, so colleagues encouraged her to run. At first, Vega told the Napa Valley College News Center, “I thought it was something only retired, affluent people do. As I got more information, I realized it was possible to keep my job and serve my community. I wanted to support working families, and make sure that the quality of life for all residents is the best it can be.”

Vega’s overarching goal is to ensure that Woodland continues to be a great place to live, work and do business. Toward that end, she works collaboratively with residents, public agencies, schools, and businesses.

Vega emigrated to California with her family when she was five years old. She grew up in Napa and was the first in her family to complete a graduate education. The councilmember has worked in the healthcare industry, and prior to that in sales and marketing for the wine and spirits industry. She and her husband have two children, who both attend Woodland schools.

First elected: November 2020.

Alma mater: Napa Valley College; UC Davis (bachelor’s degree in economics); Sonoma State University (MBA).

Notable quote: “Forget Silicon Valley, it’s happening in Woodland. We’re focusing on really facilitating new private investments and I’m excited to see some of these projects come to fruition.” (Source: Daily Democrat)
