A true local, Ed Smith’s story begins when his parents moved from Georgia to the Monterey Peninsula when his father was stationed at Fort Ord with the U.S. Army. Ed was born at the old Carmel Hospital and attended local schools, graduating from Pacific Grove High in 1971. He married his high school sweetheart, Sharron, and they had two children. Smith started a career in law enforcement that included stints with the Seaside and Monterey police departments.


In November 2022, Smith was reelected in an uncontested election.


First elected: November 2014


Alma maters: Golden Gate University (master’s degree in public administration); Sacramento State University (bachelor’s degree in criminal justice)


Other offices held: Past president of the Monterey Police Officers Association
