Coming off a season coaching my son's AYSO soccer team, I reflected back on the short season soccer in Lake Tahoe demands as snow often covers the ground for a third of the year. We volunteer coaches do our best in just a couple months to hone players' skills, get them to operate as a team, have fun, and most importantly, cultivate their love of the game so they come back next season. Some coaches have years of experience – maybe played soccer in college – or perhaps the first game they coached this fall was the first time they ever even saw a soccer match. My experience skews closer toward the latter.

Dear Editor:I am a climate-concerned voter. As this election season progressed, I was disturbed that the warming of our planet primarily the result of burning fossil fuels got so little attention from either side. Most Americans have concerns about our climate and planetary future. So, as soon as possible, I would urge the current legislature, including our rep Kevin Kiley to address the implications of our warming planet and its present consequences for forest health and the health of our communities. I urge the next session to carry the work forward. Let's all recognize that climate change is not a partisan issue. It affects us all.Sincerely,Charles Robinson, Truckee
I attended a Funeral for a Friend yesterday. The fate of Olympic Valley, formerly known as Squaw Valley, now known as Palisades Tahoe, was sealed by a unanimous vote of the Placer County Board of Supervisors. In an 11-hour marathon, heavily skewed towards presentations by the Developers, the case for an oversized, insensitive and environmentally destructive 25-year buildout development was crammed down the throats of the public. And now it will also be crammed down the throat of the fragile vale known as Olympic Valley.
