Truckee is governed by a council-manager form of government. Citizens elect five local individuals to serve overlapping four-year terms on the Town Council, and that body appoints the town manager and the town attorney. Newly elected councilmembers are seated at the first regular council meeting in December, which is also when the council selects which members will serve as mayor and vice mayor.
Town Council meetings are televised by Truckee Tahoe Community Television. Tune in live on local Channel 18.

On Friday, April 18, 2025, elected officials and agency leaders from across the Sierra region, including representatives from the Town of Truckee, Nevada City, Grass Valley, Town of Mammoth Lakes, and multiple special districts, met with Congressman Kevin Kiley in Rocklin to advocate for the reinstatement of federal funding for forest health and wildfire mitigation efforts.
At the Town Council meeting on April 22, Mayor Jan Zabriskie officially proclaimed May 2025 as Wildfire Awareness Month, reaffirming the Town of Truckee's commitment to wildfire prevention, mitigation, and safety in its vulnerable mountain community. The proclamation emphasizes the extreme threat posed by wildfire across California and the critical role the Truckee community plays in fostering resilience ahead of fire season.
When people talk about getting involved in local government, most imagine casting a vote or showing up to a public meeting. But one of the most impactful ways to shape the future of our town is also one of the most overlooked: understanding the budget.
