The Nevada County Consolidated Fire District is a full-service emergency response agency. NCCFD is a full-time, paid staff department, covering 143 square miles of residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas, through five service areas and 10 stations. There are four staffed district-owned stations, one jointly staffed city fire department station, and five unstaffed district-owned stations. The population within the district is over 32,000.

The Nevada County Consolidated Fire District is governed by a seven-member elected board, which meets on the third Thursday of each month at Station 91, 11329 McCourtney Road, Grass Valley.

Supervisors unanimously agreed to support the reorganization of Rough & Ready Fire Protection District, Penn Valley Fire Protection District, and Nevada County Consolidated Fire District. The county will also provide gap funding to operate Rough & Ready Fire Station #59 while the reorganization is under way.
