San Juan Bautista celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2019, but its roots go back much further—not just to 1797, when the 15th Spanish mission in Alta California was founded there, but to the Mutsunes, a branch of the Ohlone Indians, who lived in the region. Thanks to the efforts of preservationists, the city can boast of three national historic landmarks: the Juan Bautista de Anza House, the General José Castro house, and the San Juan Bautista Plaza Historic District,

Members of the public are invited to attend the San Juan Bautista City Council meetings, which take place at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month.

Two new projects for San Juan Bautista were considered by the city’s Historic Resources Board. The first was a gas station project at the corner of Hwy 156 and The Alameda. The second was the demolition of existing buildings at 45 Washington Street to be followed by the construction of four duplex units within two two-story apartment buildings.
