Like many Silicon Valley towns, Los Altos was once a stop along the Southern Pacific Railroad. Now this bucolic burg is bypassed by Interstate 280, which offers residents a scenic commute to jobs in Silicon Valley and San Francisco. For those lucky enough to work at home (or not work at all), the city’s seven square miles are replete with parks, recreational amenities, and seven shopping districts. Incorporated in 1952, Los Altos is a general law city with a city manager who is appointed by the City Council and is responsible for city's 130 employees. In addition, some 200 residents volunteer their time, including service on appointed commissions and committees.
