Mayor Clyde Roberson

Clyde Roberson has served 26 years on the Monterey City Council, including six terms as mayor. Born in Oakland, Calif., Roberson started his teaching career in 1968 and taught in Monterey for 35 years. His children and grandchildren all attended local schools. Roberson served four years on the Library Board and created the Historical Preservation and Cultural Arts Commissions.

One of his achievements was opening the Monterey Sports Center—a task he undertook after his students and local residents repeatedly wrote that the city needed an indoor swimming facility and exercise facilities. Roberson also started the Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program; since 1985, it has funneled $90 million into maintaining residential streets, storm drains, sewers, parks, and city-wide projects.

First elected mayor: November 2014

Notable quote: "I really feel it’s important to keep our council team together," Mayor Clyde Roberson said during the campaign. "We have three pandemics: the health pandemic of course; the economic and budget crisis; and the social justice issues." Source: Monterey County Weekly
