The Community Development Department comprises two divisions that provide current and long-range planning. The Planning Division implements the general plan, local coastal program, municipal code, and state and federal laws. It establishes procedures related to code compliance and building inspection functions. Staff serve as a liaison to the Planning Commission, Design Review Board and Tree Committee.

The Building Division issues permits and handles inspections and code enforcement.
