The City of King is a full-service city with a council-manager form of government. The five-member City Council is elected by districts to four-year staggered terms. The switch from at-large elections was made in November 2016.

The City Council awarded a bid to Monterey Peninsula Engineering for implementing King City’s Downtown Streetscape Project, which started construction on June 12.
Oscar Avalos was sworn in as the newest member of the King City Council on March 28. Avalos is filling the District 1 seat vacated by Darlene Acosta, who resigned shortly before her death Feb. 14.

Former councilmember Darlene Acosta unexpectedly died the same day her resignation from the city council of King City was effective,
Darlene Acosta, who submitted a letter of resignation from the City Council due to illness, passed away Feb. 14.
Councilmember Darlene Acosta will vacate her District 1 council seat effective Feb. 14 due to health reasons. “I have considered it an extreme privilege to serve,” Acosta said.
