Community volunteer Karen Ferlito was active in the Carmel-by-the-Sea community for more than three decades before she ran for City Council in 2020. “I believe this is a time of unexpected and significant change. It requires a council member who can merge Carmel’s historic and eclectic past with the reality of tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities,” Ferlito wrote on her campaign site, KarenFerlito.com. Currently president of Friends of Mission Trail Nature Preserve, Ferlito also served on Carmel’s Forest and Beach Commission, the Big Sur Land Trust board and the Big Sur Marathon event committee. And her 12 years of experience at Carmel Bay Company an informed perspective on both business and residential interests in the village. On KarenFerlito.com, she shares an optimistic view for the future:”Our Village has been, and will continue to be, economically impacted by Covid-19. Let us use this time to reexamine, reconsider and perhaps redesign aspects of our beautiful city to create a vibrant, safe and walkable streetscape that better serves our residents and visitors alike.”
Ferlito represents the council on the following entities: Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, the Coastwalk-California Coast Trail Association, and the Litter Abatement Task Force.

The tragic shooting death of a young man in Carmel experiencing a mental health incident on Friday, Oct. 25 had a big impact on residents and workers of the small village, especially in the immediate neighborhood.
For such a small town, Carmel has some big issues to decide, like where to squeeze in affordable homes, what to do about a crumbling police station and the threat of sea level rise.
