The city manager is responsible for the city’s day-to-day business, as well as the appointment of all department heads except the city clerk and the city attorney.

The city manager oversees the City Clerk's Office and other departments, and is responsible for developing and sustaining activities that increase citizen involvement.

The city manager works closely with Cupertino's public safety providers, such as Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and Santa Clara County Fire Department, and the elementary, high school and college districts.
