BART’s expansion through Silicon Valley is taking shape as pre-construction work gets underway in Santa Clara.

The VTA megaproject to bring BART to downtown San Jose and Santa Clara, with a cost estimate that's already ballooned to more than two and a half times its original target, is now facing yet another increase and timeline delay.

South Bay transit leaders have approved a major contract to get construction underway on a long-planned light rail extension project in East San Jose.

VTA said it anticipates a steady delivery rate of six buses per week starting this week, with a completely new fleet expected to be operational in the coming month as VTA decommissions most of its remaining diesel buses.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation, in partnership with other Bay Area transit agencies, announced 50% discounted fares for lower-income Bay Area residents.

From now through Nov. 16, the following stations will be closed: Vienna and Reamwood in Sunnyvale; Old Ironsides, Great America and Lick Mill in Santa Clara; and Champion in San Jose.

Local officials gathered at the Gilroy Transit Center to celebrate the return of the bus line that was suspended three years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, VTA entered into a cost-sharing agreement with the Santa Clara County Office of Supportive Housing, leveraging Measure A tax funding and VTA land to build four 100% affordable housing developments.

When the project is completed in 2029, VTA riders will be able to get on light rail at the Eastridge Transit Center and connect with BART at Milpitas Station.
