Reelected for a third term as mayor, Rich Tran wears his youth as a badge of honor. A native son of Milpitas, Tran served his first two terms while in his early 30s. “Quite frankly, I think my age and race had a positive effect during my candidacy. Folks in Milpitas wanted someone with less experience in politics to mix it up and bring a new set of eyes to city hall,” Tran explained to Pivot, a site run by the Progressive Vietnamese American Organization.

Mayor Rich Tran has withdrawn from the 2022 Milpitas City Council race. On Aug. 17, the last day of the nomination period, Tran made the announcement. With this new development, Tran will be off the council for the first time since 2016.

Milpitas Mayor Rich Tran allegedly attended Tuesday’s city council meeting without telling colleagues he had been exposed to COVID-19 last week. The mayor says he has since tested negative, but Councilwoman Karina Dominguez has asked the city to go back to remote meetings.
