The County Planning Commission advises the Board of Supervisors on matters concerning growth, development, housing and environmental conservation. The commission is composed of five members and five alternates—one of each from the five supervisorial districts—who serve for a period of four years.

Functions of the commission include developing a general plan and any necessary specific plans; reviewing the annual Planning Department work program and budget, and making recommendations to the board; reviewing the county capital improvement program; maintaining, with the help of staff, a commission policy manual; and communicating with other county advisory bodies concerned with planning matters.

In addition, the Planning Commission has been designated by the County Code as the approving body for a number of different types of development permits and land divisions. For other matters that require final board approval, the commission makes recommendations to the board. Agendas and future meeting dates can be found here.
