In October 2021, the Salinas Police Department got a new chief: Robert Filice, who has served the department since 2017. He previously worked for the police departments in Marina and Seaside. The force also includes two assistant chiefs, five commanders, nine sergeants, a criminologist, a recruitment office. An area command program has been instituted in the Patrol Division. The city is divided into four areas of command; individual commanders are assigned to those areas. Commanders attend neighborhood or business meetings, meet with community members, respond to crime or quality-of-life issues, and work with Community Services to develop a more active Neighborhood Watch.
