The oldest local government office, the Tahoe City Public Utility District has provided water and sewer service to three-quarters of the homes and businesses in Placer and El Dorado counties since 1938. Its borders run from Emerald Bay to Dollar Hill, and along the Truckee River to the Nevada County line, amassing more than 31 square miles.

The Tahoe City Public Utility District will conduct a consolidated general election with both Placer County and El Dorado County Elections Departments on November 5, 2024. Three board member seats will be up for election.
At a joint North Tahoe Public Utility District and Tahoe City Public Utility District meeting, both boards gave a green light to continue to discuss putting a tax measure to fund a North Lake Tahoe Recreation and Aquatics Center on the ballot at the earliest in 2026.
