The Nevada County District Attorney occupies offices in Nevada City and Truckee. In Nevada City, there are nine full-time deputy district attorneys and an assistant district attorney, three full-time investigators, two part-time investigators, and, a clerical staff of 11. The investigators can also be assigned to Truckee cases. In Truckee, there is one full-time deputy district attorney and a full-time clerical support staff of two. Voters elect the district attorney for a four-year term of office. The office’s primary responsibility is the prosecution of felony and misdemeanor offenses that are referred by law enforcement agencies. Specialized vertical prosecution units have been established to handle child abuse, driving under the influence cases, auto theft cases, drug cases, spousal abuse, sexual assault, and statutory rape. The office also has an NSF Bad Check Program.
