Shannan Moon, the daughter of former Nevada City police chief Jim Moon, joined the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer in 1990. She rose through the ranks of the department as the first female sergeant, lieutenant, and captain respectively. 


In 2018 she first ran for and won the elected position of Sheriff - Coroner - Public Administrator. She was reelected in 2022.
